The beginner’s guide to car performance upgrades

Once you’ve got your car, it’s only the start of the fun. Modifying cars has been popular ever since the car was invented, and it’s certainly not stopping now (Bluespark are testament to that). Today, there’s a huge number of car performance upgrades and cheap car mods available on the market today. The increase in ‘cheap’ car mods and the likes has turned us all into vehicle designers, and that’s no bad thing… For those that are just starting out and looking for the easiest and best car mods, we’ve pulled together a list you can follow.

Easiest cars to modify

First things first, you need to be sure the car performance upgrades suit your model. Starting at the entry level of car modifications and the like, the Vauxhall Corsa is one of the easiest cars to modify. This model is one of the best tuner cars for beginners due to their relatively low price, and that they are equally as easy to come by.

Likewise, the Honda Civic is another option for the best tuner cars - especially due to the flexibility of the platform. The Civic has always boasted good handling, and is noted for its simple layout and ability to swallow the likes of a petrol tuning box and perform well.

Other options for the easiest cars to modify include the Ford Mustang GT - still one of the most popular models worldwide - and the Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

What are the best car mods?

Now you’ve got your car, you need to know what you can do. There are plenty of car performance upgrades available today, but we’re sharing the easiest place to start for those just getting into the mod industry.

Tuning box

When it comes to quality, and cheap car mods, you’ll not find much better than the tuning box. The tuning box - designed for both petrol and diesel cars - will improve power and torque, meaning you’ll have more speed behind the wheel. Essentially, the tuner car parts trick the ECU. The signal between the ECU and the fuel cylinders is altered, causing the ECU to inject more fuel, improving the torque. Unlike car remapping, however, the tuning box is only a temporary (and more cost-effective measure). A car remap is permanent, while a tuning box can be removed once you sell or return the car - without voiding your warranty.

You can also install the tuning box yourself, once you have got it from a reputable tuning shop. There are plenty of guides available online that will take you through the process, from start to finish. However, make sure you use a tuning shop that has testimonials and a good reputation, as you don’t want to do more damage than good. If you are still feeling unsure, a good tuning shop will also fit the box.

Another one of the easiest car mods available for everyone is to update the wheels. When modifying your car, you want high impact - and the wheels will take care of that. The wheels are a great way to get a reaction when updating the design of your car. You can start with changing the alloys before moving onto bigger car performance upgrades.

While this may not be one of the easiest, it is still one of the best car mods. Lowering a car - made famous from the likes of Fast & Furious - has a bit of a rep, but it’s becoming a more accepted car modification in 2018. There’s nothing better than seeing a car on its arse, and there are a range of variations. Whether you are going for the look where the arches of the car meet the wheel lip, or where the wheel lip protrudes from the arch - there are plenty things you can do to improve design and performance. Before going for it, however, we suggest looking into certain considerations, such as the wheel size, tyre size, wheel width, spacers etc.

The exhaust has been modified for years. In fact, there’s not a model in the world that hasn’t had its car modified. One of the best and cheap car mods is to replace the factory-fitted exhaust for an aftermarket exhaust. Essentially, these are designed to improve performance, visual appeal and even the sound. There are some pretty sweet sounding exhausts in the market today, with plenty of companies also able to knock one up to your requirements.

This is, in fact, one of the cheapest car mods, and you can change the sound of your vehicle for a couple of hundred quid. Add to that, an aftermarket exhaust can free up the power of your engine, making it more efficient.

Updating the exterior of your car is a sure fire way to get people’s attention. Plus, it can be done fairly quickly. Although, exterior styling - such as ride skirts, spoilers and the like - will change the handling of the car, so always make sure you go to a reputable dealer. You don’t want to be spending money on relatively low-cost car mods to have to spend more on repairs…

Ultimately, there are so many car mods out there today, and we suggest speaking to dealers and others on car forums for the best place to start. You can also read more on our petrol and diesel tuning box products here.
